Solo Independents - Firkin Crane, Cork
Review of Hand Fall , solo choreography.
"The stunning composure of Hand Fall as part of the Solo Independents presentation at the Firkin Crane speaks for the celebratory venture as a whole: devised as a gesture to International Women's Day, the eight dance-pieces provide individual contributions to a corporate statement.
Hand Fall is the work of Jools Gilson-Ellis, extended by the colour projections of slides by Gail Smithwalters. The dancer moves to the music of Mel Mercier at, on and around a table, in a gilded pool of light; blunt muscle and sharp bone reflect the light as the body examines its own extremities. For something so intimate to become so declamatory on stage takes the dancer into a new relationship with her body and with her audience, and for this vision alone, Solo Independents would have to be welcomed."
